Chapter 22

Caileen carried the small, green skull down the covered passageway connecting the library to her father's office. She stopped for a moment to admire the beauty of the garden courtyard framed by the columned stone arches of the passage. A golden light danced as the breeze rustled the branches of the ornamental trees. The low rumble of Cavan's voice, heated in argument, seeped from his room. She hesitated at the door, her hand poised to knock.

"Who do you think you are, questioning me?" her father hissed. "I have everything under control here! The skull is your responsibility, Zador."

Caileen's skin prickled. What skull? And who was Zador? Her father sounded angry. Perhaps this wouldn't be a good time to interrupt.

Another voice spoke, a man's. "The archeologist has left Scotland." Caileen didn't recognize its owner. Why did he sound so far away?

"He must have found the skull and moved it." Cavan's response was low and intense. "You told me you were watching him."

"I don't know how..."

"Excuses will not help us."

"If the skull has been moved, why don't you know where it is?" the voice growled back.

Both men seemed furious. But...what skull? One from the library? One from the council? Or...the man had mentioned Scotland. Could they be talking about the thirteenth skull on Earth?

"That is your problem, not mine. Find the skull, Zador, or you will end up with nothing." Caileen had never heard her soft-spoken father talk like this. A chill touched Caileen's neck. If it was the thirteenth skull they were talking about, the council and Atlantis needed that skull. And it was...lost?

"I'll find it," the distant voice snapped.

She knocked and opened the door. "I'm sorry to interrupt..."

Her father sat at his desk with his back to the door but jolted at her entrance.

There was no one else in the office.

He spun in his chair with his hand over his heart. "You startled me, my dear."

"I thought I heard you talking to someone." Caileen peered around the room.

"There is no one here. Just me mumbling to myself." The face smiling up at her was the one she had loved her whole life. Could she have imagined what she heard?

"What is that?" Caileen pointed to a baseball-sized gold crystal skull sitting in the middle of the desk, a faint glow fading showing the skull had been used recently.

"Ah, you have caught me. My memory is not what it used to be. I need to keep notes on everything. You probably heard me talking to the skull and getting mad at myself."

She had noticed him staring off into space a lot lately. He was getting older and the search for the lost library archives had been taking up a lot of his time. Perhaps that was what this was all about. "I brought you the green skull you asked for with the information on the Great Crystal. Do you need me to help you with anything?"

"No, no. I will be fine." He took the skull from her. "The research you are doing is very helpful.
